Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

Applications are now open for the Fully Funded Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships in Canada, available for both national and international students. Each year, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program offers up to 166 scholarships.

The Vanier Scholarship supports students pursuing a Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.), Combined MA/PhD, MD/Ph.D., or Masters leading to a Ph.D. It is funded by the Government of Canada and allows recipients to study at any Canadian university participating in the program. The Vanier CGS is valued at $50,000 per year for a maximum of three years.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the Vanier CGS, candidates must:

  1. Be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have a Vanier CGS quota.
  2. Be pursuing their first doctoral degree (including joint programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD, provided they have a significant research component).
  3. Intend to pursue full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution in the academic year following the announcement of results.
  4. Have completed no more than 20 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by May 1, 2025, if enrolled after completing a Master’s degree.
  5. Have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by May 1, 2025, if enrolled in a joint graduate research program or accelerated from a Bachelor’s to a Ph.D. without a Master’s degree.
  6. Have achieved a first-class average, as defined by their institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates should check with their institution for the specific definition of a first-class average.
  7. Not hold, nor have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC for their doctoral program.

Eligible Programs:

An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that culminates in a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is reviewed at the institutional level. Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree and clinically-oriented programs with a significant research component are also eligible.

Evaluation Criteria:

Nominees are evaluated and selected based on three equally weighted criteria:

  • Academic Excellence
  • Research Potential
  • Leadership (both potential and demonstrated ability)

  • ResearchNet application form (including two letters of reference)
  • Canadian Common CV (CCV)
  • Research Contributions (max 1 page)
  • Personal Leadership Statement (max 2 pages for English applications; max 2.5 pages for French applications)
  • Special Circumstances (optional, max 0.5 pages)
  • Two Leadership letters of reference (max 2 pages each)
  • Research Proposal (max 2 pages for English applications; max 2.5 pages for French applications)
  • Project References (max 5 pages)
  • Transcripts

  8. Identify referees.
  9. Enter degree information.
  10. Enter proposal information and supporting documents.
